Description

CMC Markets Background

Based in London, CMC Markets is an online financial trading site dedicated to spread betting and other financial investments. CMC Markets was founded in 1989 and now has 15 offices around the world. The broker is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in the US, and the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). They have won numerous awards including the 2012 Best Spread Betting Service from Shares Magazine and have been voted by MoneyAM as the forex brokerage with the “Best Online Education” for the three years in a row. CMC Markets offers both regular and fixed risk accounts. The broker has produced an outstanding proprietary trading platform that enables investors to concentrate on the operational performance by filtering out irrelevant price movements and formations. They offer a free demo to help clients become proficient at operating their platform.

Features of CMC Markets

CMC Markets is known to have extensive educational resources. Most of the tools address the needs of beginners by introducing key topics of trading like Trading Mistakes to Avoid, Economic Announcements, Financial Markets, Company fundamentals, Trading Plans, Trend lines and Resistances and Supports. However, professional traders stress that the eight week ‘Trading IQ’ course is perfect for more seasoned traders because it is exceptionally diverse and very informative. Joining the course entitles traders to a free trading day where they are entitled to keep profits and CMC will cover all your losses. CMC Markets Customer Support can be contacted by phone, email, fax, and live chat.

Conclusion

CMC Markets truly focuses on providing highly competitive spreads, a powerful trading platform, and exceptional educational resources for their clients. They’d be a good broker for anyone looking for these.

Beware those “cash rebates” for high-volume traders and margin calls in highly-leveraged arenas. If all you’ve got going for you is gut feel, you can quickly lose your shirt. Notice how the cash rebates apply only for at least £10 million in notional value. Like they say, high rewards = tremendous risk.

My evidently experienced (but very pushy) broker explained spread betting and CFD trading to me this way: if CMC Markets quotes a bid of $200 and an offer of $203 for ABC stock (notice how the spread is only a dollar either way) and you believe that the price for ABC will be lower than $200. If I believe that the stock would be go below $200, I might “bet” $2 for every dollar that ABC falls below $200. If opening price after a week came to $190, I stand to make $20 but lose $30 if the price nudged upwards to $215.

CMC Markets is not even in forex trading alone. With a quarter-century of trading behind them, the traders here will quote positions on one currency alone (or a pair, since that is how the forex market works), metals, the major types of crude oil, equities and even Treasuries. It makes for a great variety of positions, day in and day out, and the temptation to place many small bets on the table. Like the inveterate gambler in sports betting, one’s stake is quickly gone.

I’m a Hertfordshire punter, impatient with riding the markets and much taken with short-term gains aka spread betting. As in the Sports Bet arena, I love the fact that CMC Markets quotes two prices, the “spread” or the difference between the bid and offer price.

I’m evidently in the CMC Markets game not to own the underlying stock but to take a position on the price movement of the stock: If Apple currently does $112 per share, and CMC Markets quotes a bid a dollar lower or higher than the offer, that is quite enough for me.

The safest way to avoid losing a ton of cash in spread betting or CFD trading is, of course to take a position on the US dollar (if you were Putin or the Red Chinese Politburo and knew how far you could drive exchange rates) or stay with your favorite equity.
